A question that I get asked SO often by clients.
We'll it depends on what you want out of a PDA/Smartphone. So let's cover smartphones first. Generally, all smartphones will give you: a phone/address book and a calendar that should sync with Microsoft Outlook Contacts and Calendar. Then you'll probably get a task/to-do list and memo/note application, that again should sync with Outlook Tasks and Notes. You'll have a music player for MP3s and pod casts. A web/internet browser albeit with a smallish screen but will let you look at suitable 'mobile friendly' sites such as the great BBC mobile portal (www.bbc.co.uk/mobile). Finally an MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) file reader.
My next question is always "do you regularly use Microsoft Office? and would you like the best partnership between your desk/laptop Office data and a PDA/Smartphone? In which case I'd recommend a Windows Mobile or older Pocket PC device: this OS (Operating System) giving the closest match between a PC and mobile device. Don't get me wrong, most other OS devices do sync/convert with the Office suite of Outlook Inbox, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks & Notes; but Windows Mobile/Pocket PC does it better! My current primary device is a Blackberry 8820 but when it sync's with Outlook, I don't watch and wait, it's painfully slow!
For Mac users my suggestion is always a Palm OS device but now iPhones are a good choice.
